So, I have this
neighbor Mr. Cartwright. He's an elderly man, retired. Anyway I used to think
he was really nosey because he sits on his porch all day and watches the people
in the neighborhood. It used to really bother me. But then I went on vacation last
year and someone tried to break into my house while I was gone Mr. Cartwright
saw them and called the police right away. Now I'm glad to have someone like Mr.
Cartwright in the neighborhood. It's good to know that someone's watching out,
you know?

Nancy is my next
door neighbor. She used to watch our children whenever my wife and I had to
work late. I always thought she was someone you could really count on, and I
never worried about leaving the kids with her. Until last year. I had to work
late and my wife was on a business trip, so I ask Nancy if she would mind
picking up the kids from daycare and she said okay. But later that day, I got a
call from the daycare saying that the kids have been waiting there for two and
a half hours! She completely forgot about them. Now I just don't think I can
trust her.

é minha vizinha. Ela costumava cuidar de nossos filhos sempre que minha esposa
e eu tínhamos que trabalhar até tarde. Sempre achei que ela era alguém com quem
você realmente podia contar, e nunca me preocupei em deixar as crianças com
ela. Até o ano passado. Tive que trabalhar até tarde e minha esposa estava em
viagem de negócios, então perguntei a Nancy se ela se importaria de pegar as
crianças na creche e ela disse que tudo bem. Mas mais tarde naquele dia, recebi
um telefonema da creche dizendo que as crianças estavam esperando lá por duas
horas e meia! Ela se esqueceu completamente deles. Agora eu simplesmente não
acho que posso confiar nela.

When dr. Wu first
moved into the neighborhood I didn't think very much of him. I invited him to a
couple of neighborhood events of barbecues, dinner parties, you know. But he
would always decline. He was never rude about it, but he didn't seem very interested
in getting to know his neighbors. I just figured that he was kind of arrogant.
Later however I found out that he spends all of his free time volunteering at a
free Health Clinic downtown. That's why he never comes to a neighborhood event.
He just doesn't have time!

dr. Wu mudou-se para a vizinhança, não gostei muito dele. Eu o convidei para
alguns eventos na vizinhança, churrascos, jantares, você sabe. Mas ele sempre
recusava. Ele nunca foi rude com relação a isso, mas não parecia muito
interessado em conhecer seus vizinhos. Eu só achei que ele era meio arrogante.
Mais tarde, porém, descobri que ele passa todo o seu tempo livre como
voluntário em uma clínica de saúde gratuita no centro da cidade. É por isso que
ele nunca vai a um evento do bairro. Ele simplesmente não tem
tempo!

I really can't
stand my neighbor Gary Neil. The funny thing is that wasn't always the case. I
used to get along with him really well. He seemed like a quiet polite guy. He
was friendly but mind his business, just generally a good neighbor, you know? But
in the last year or so he's got a new hobby: repairing and routing old
motorcycles. And these things are so loud! You'll get up around 6:30 or 7 a.m.
on a Saturday and start working on one of these motorcycles, like fixing the
engine and then testing it. He wakes up half the neighborhood. I talked to him
about it before, but he just won’t listen.

realmente não suporto meu vizinho Gary Neil. O engraçado é que nem sempre foi
assim. Eu costumava me dar muito bem com ele. Ele parecia um cara quieto e educado.
Ele era amigável, mas cuidava da vida dele, geralmente apenas um bom vizinho,
sabe? Mas no último ano ele ganhou um novo hobby: consertar e encaminhar
motocicletas velhas. E essas coisas são tão altas! Você vai acordar por volta
das 6h30 ou 7h de um sábado e começar a trabalhar em uma dessas motocicletas,
como consertar o motor e depois testá-lo. Ele acorda metade da vizinhança.
Falei com ele sobre isso antes, mas ele simplesmente não quis ouvir.
