Peter: Good evening and welcome to Musical Marvels, the show that tells you the stories behind the stars. This week we’re looking at multiinstrumentalists. Musicians who aren’t just great guitarists or piano players but those who can play anything and everything. With me in the studio is music critic Maria Graham. Hi, Maria.

Maria: Hi, Peter. Thanks for inviting me on the show.

Peter: So, Maria. Multi-instrumentalists. Are there many musicians who play lots of different instruments?

Maria: Yes, there are. They are often musicians who usually focus on one instrument, especially when they’re playing live, but sometimes like to play more than one or even everything on their albums.

Peter: For example?

Maria: Well, a good example is Stevie Wonder. He’s famous as a keyboard player but on many of his albums he plays lots of other instruments.

Peter: I know he became famous in the sixties as a harmonica player. So, what else can he play?

Maria: He’s a great drummer. And a great singer too, of course. In fact, he plays most of the instruments on many of his classic 1970s songs. For example, on the song “Isn’t She Lovely?” he plays all the instruments except the keyboards – the instrument he’s most famous for playing.

Peter: OK, so that’s Stevie Wonder. Who else is a multiinstrumentalist?

Maria: Well, one of the greats is Prince.

Peter: I thought Prince was a guitarist.

Maria: Yes, he is, but he also plays drums, keyboards… practically everything. On his first album, “For You”, he plays all the instruments. Later he used some backing musicians, such as his band The Revolution, but he often still plays all the instruments himself, as he did on his famous songs “When Doves Cry”, “Sign of the Times”, and “Kiss”.

Peter: But when he plays live, he plays with other musicians. Right?

Maria: Oh yes. Prince has a great backing band, The New Power Generation, but he often records alone. Prince was, of course, influenced by singersongwriter and record producer Todd Rundgren, who is another famous multi-instrumentalist.

Peter: What about Paul McCartney? I think he’s made albums on his own.

Maria: Yes, that’s right. McCartney is another multiinstrumentalist. He’s a good drummer and percussionist but can also play instruments such as the trumpet. He has made three albums on which he plays most of the instruments. These include McCartney and McCartney II on which he plays everything.

Peter: Anymore?

Maria: Well, there’s Phil Collins. He’s a singer, but he can also play the drums and keyboards. One of the first multi-instrumentalists of modern pop was Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones. He played lots of different instruments, including the guitar, the sitar, and the saxophone, as well as playing them on recordings of many of The Stones’ famous hits of the sixties. Anton Newcombe is one of the most unusual multi-instrumentalists. He’s the leader of the band The Brian Jonestown Massacre, and he says that he can play over 80 instruments. I don’t know if this is true but he’s touring at the moment so I’m going to go to the concert and start counting.

Pedro: Então, Maria. Multi-instrumentistas. Existem muitos músicos que tocam muitos instrumentos diferentes?

Maria: Sim, existem. Muitas vezes são músicos que costumam focar em um instrumento, principalmente quando estão tocando ao vivo, mas às vezes gostam de tocar mais de um ou até mesmo tudo em seus álbuns.

Pedro: Por exemplo?

Maria: Bem, um bom exemplo é Stevie Wonder. Ele é famoso como tecladista, mas em muitos de seus álbuns ele toca muitos outros instrumentos.

Peter: Eu sei que ele ficou famoso nos anos 60 como gaitista. Então, o que mais ele pode tocar?

Maria: Ele é um ótimo baterista. E um grande cantor também, é claro. Na verdade, ele toca a maioria dos instrumentos em muitas de suas canções clássicas dos anos 1970. Por exemplo, na música "Isn't She Lovely?" ele toca todos os instrumentos, exceto os teclados – o instrumento pelo qual ele é mais famoso por tocar.

Peter: OK, então esse é Stevie Wonder. Quem mais é multi-instrumentista?

Have you ever bought anything then regretted it afterwards? A recent survey looks at some of those things we wish we’d never bought. Top of the list was the electric toothbrush. “I can’t believe I wasted my money on one of those!” said Valerie Spooker, a 32-year-old architect. “My dentist told me to get one, and I did. But now it’s just another one of those gadgets that never gets used. “Why do they try to make everything electric? It’s a simple thing to brush your teeth and you don’t need a machine to do it for you,” she added. Next on the list was the inkjet printer. “If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s my inkjet printer,” said Mark Hughes, a 29-year-old sales assistant, who also took part in the survey. “OK, so the printers are cheap, but the ink cartridges are really expensive. And the thing is, if you use the printer regularly, you need to buy lots of cartridges; and if you don’t use it, the ink dries up and you need to buy some more anyway. It’s a loss-loss situation with these printers.” Another thing on the list was the SatNav. “I got one for Christmas last year and used it a couple of times,” explained Harriet Harvey, a 28-year-old lawyer. “But it’s a complete waste of money. I spent loads of time fiddling with it and trying to key in the correct addresses, but in the end I got lost anyway. And that irritating voice that keeps telling you to turn left, when you know it’s a right turn! I’m going to stick to paper maps from now on.” Also on the list was the radar detector. “My boyfriend got me one for my birthday,” explained Abigail Winters, a 31-year-old engineer. “It’s supposed to tell you where the speed cameras are, but it’s a complete waste of money. How about driving within speed limits? That doesn’t cost a penny, and it's completely stress-free!” Also on the list was the Memory Foam Mattress. “We bought one of these just after getting married,” explained Harvey Jones, a 33-year-old chef. “But I hate it. You sort of sink into it and then it molds around your body. I often woke up the next day with a bad back. I’m back on my cheap-but-comfortable foam mattress and I’m sleeping like a baby.” Do you have any unwanted objects at home?

E o problema é que, se você usa a impressora regularmente, precisa comprar muitos cartuchos; e se você não usar, a tinta seca e você precisa comprar mais de qualquer maneira. É uma situação de perda de perda com essas impressoras.” Outra coisa na lista foi o SatNav. “Ganhei um no Natal do ano passado e o usei algumas vezes”, explicou Harriet Harvey, uma advogada de 28 anos. “Mas é um completo desperdício de dinheiro. Passei muito tempo mexendo com ele e tentando digitar os endereços corretos, mas no final me perdi de qualquer maneira. E aquela voz irritante que fica dizendo para você virar à esquerda, quando você sabe que é à direita! Vou me ater aos mapas de papel a partir de agora. Também na lista estava o detector de radar. “Meu namorado me deu um de aniversário”, explicou Abigail Winters, uma engenheira de 31 anos. “Ele deveria dizer a você onde estão os radares de velocidade, mas é um completo desperdício de dinheiro. Que tal dirigir dentro dos limites de velocidade? Isso não custa um centavo, e é completamente livre de estresse!” Também na lista estava o colchão de espuma viscoelástica. “Compramos um desses logo depois de nos casarmos”, explicou Harvey Jones, um chef de 33 anos. “Mas eu odeio isso. Você meio que afunda nele e então ele se molda ao redor do seu corpo. Muitas vezes eu acordava no dia seguinte com dores nas costas. Estou de volta ao meu colchão de espuma barato, mas confortável, e estou dormindo como um bebê. Você tem algum objeto indesejado em casa?
