Jessica: So, erm, busy at work?

Bob: Yeah, a bit.

Jessica: Did you go to the conference last week?

Bob: No, I didn't.

Jessica: Oh, right. Erm, have you seen anything good on TV lately?

Bob: Not really.

Jessica: Where, where did you go to school?

Bob: What?

Jessica: School? Erm, where did you go?

Bob: That was a long time ago.

Jessica: I know. Erm, Well, I went to this really unusual school. It was vegetarian.

Bob: Vegetarian? You mean, like, you couldn't eat meat?

Jessica: Yes. And we didn't have to wear a uniform or go to class either.

Bob: You didn't have to go to class? What was the name of the school?

Jessica: St Christopher's. It was in Letchworth — a small city just north of London. Have you heard of it?

Bob: No. Was it big?

Jessica: Not really — about 350 pupils.

Bob: No meat! That is weird. My school was pretty strict. There were rules for just about everything! For example, at break time you weren't allowed to just stand around doing nothing, you had to play football or basketball or you had to join one of the clubs — the chess club, the drawing club or something like that. And if you didn't want to do any of these things you had to walk along a yellow line around the edge of the playground.

Jessica: Like prisoners.

Bob: Yeah, and they were really strict about fighting. Once, this older kid in year 12 threw some water over me. My shirt got soaked and I was cold, so I went to the teacher and asked if I could call someone to bring me another shirt, and you know what happened?  

Jessica: What?

Bob: I got suspended for fighting.

Jessica: Suspended? That isn't fair.

Bob: Yeah, and then... (fades out]

Jessica: Então, hum, ocupado no trabalho?

Bob: Sim, um pouco.

Jessica: Você foi à conferência na semana passada?

Bob: Não, eu não fui.

Jessica: Ah, certo. Hum, você viu algo bom na TV ultimamente?

Bob: Não realmente.

Jessica: Onde, onde você estudou?

Bob: O quê?

Jessica: Escola? Hum, onde você estudou?

Bob: Isso foi há muito tempo.

Jessica: Eu sei. Hum, bem, eu fui para uma escola realmente incomum. Era vegetariana.

Bob: Vegetariana? Você quer dizer que não podia comer carne?

Jessica: Sim. E nós não tínhamos que usar uniforme ou ir para a aula também. Bob: Você não tinha que ir para a aula? Qual era o nome da escola?

Jessica: St Christopher's. Ficava em Letchworth — uma pequena cidade ao norte de Londres. Você já ouviu falar?

Bob: Não. Era grande?

Jessica: Não muito — cerca de 350 alunos.

Bob: Sem carne! Isso é estranho. Minha escola era bem rígida. Havia regras para praticamente tudo! Por exemplo, no intervalo você não podia simplesmente ficar parado sem fazer nada, tinha que jogar futebol ou basquete ou tinha que participar de um dos clubes — o clube de xadrez, o clube de desenho ou algo assim. E se você não quisesse fazer nenhuma dessas coisas, tinha que caminhar ao longo de uma linha amarela ao redor do pátio.

Jessica: Como prisioneiros.

Bob: Sim, e eles eram realmente rígidos sobre brigas. Uma vez, um garoto mais velho do 12º ano jogou água em mim. Minha camisa ficou encharcada e eu fiquei com frio, então fui ao professor e perguntei se podia ligar para alguém me trazer outra camisa, e sabe o que aconteceu?

Jessica: O quê?

Bob: Eu fui suspenso por brigar.

Jessica: Suspenso? Isso não é justo.

Bob: Sim, e então... (desvanece)
