Joe: Hey, you know what dawned on me?

Will: What’s that?

Joe: The last time I saw you, you told, you mentioned something and, I didn’t even realize it until we had already gone our separate ways. And that was that you had lived in Chile before. I didn’t even remember that. It’s like I don’t know…

Will: Yeah, I…

Joe: …know if you ever told me that.

Will: Yeah, I lived in Chile, uh, for a year not long after college.

Joe: Wait, what year was this?

Will: That was in 1992.

Joe: Oh, man. So, did you, pretty much right after you graduated, you just decided to travel, or…

Will: It took me a year to save up the money and then I went travelin’. Yeah, I planned on goin’ right away. But it took me a little while and, uh, I made it.

Joe: Did you know Spanish at the time, or….

Will: I thought I did.

Joe: [laugh]

Will: When I got to Chile I realized I had no idea what anybody was talking about.

Joe: Was it because they were speaking too fast, or…

Will: It was because I didn’t really know Spanish.

Joe: [laugh] Wait, how much, how much Spanish did you have before that? Did you take some in college? Or was it just from living in San Francisco and living in The Mission or something?

Will: Oh, I had taken Spanish since I was twelve years old. And I was, and I took it, uh, for about three years in college as well. And when I got to Chile, it was really difficult, um, uh.... However I was able to get by. And I was able to make friends.

Joe: Right.

Will: And I met some really nice people who were patient with the language and everything, uh.... It was a group of, uh, people who liked to, uh, um, hang out and play guitar and go dancing…

Joe: Oh that’s good.

Will: …and there were a lot of, a lot of people, a lot of foreigners, like travelers, in the group. But not like tourists. But people who were kind of my age and who were living there.

Joe: Yeah.

Will: And they, uh, uh.... There were these Chilean people who, uh, basically were my friends the whole time I was there. I was only there for a year. But still I met a lot of really good people, uh, very early on. And by the time I left I spoke a lot of Spanish.

Joe: A year, that’s a good amount of time.

Will: Yeah, I wouldn’t have been able to learn so much Spanish as I did in a year though if I hadn’t been in school for so long. Even though it wasn’t, uh, um, even though it wasn’t super fa-…a super fast way to learn Spanish, uh.... I mean I learned so much more a year in Chile than I did in all the school that I ever had. Uh, it still gave me a really good foundation. So when I went to, uh, Chile I was able to, uh, um, to make friends there and, uh, speak the language almost all the time. And by the time I came back I knew a lot of Spanish. That was fun, but, uh, the trip itself was the best part. The experience of, uh, living and traveling and working in Chile was something I’ll never forget. That was one of the best years of my life.

Joe: Was that the first time that you’d done any sort of, like, y’know, traveling like that? Or had you, had you gone on a trip like this, y’know, while you were in college during summer? Or…

Will: I had gone on, uh, uh many trips to Mexico....

Joe: Uh-huh.

Will: when I was in college. Every chance I could, of course, I would go to Mexico. Ah, I love Mexico.

Joe: Yeah, it’s…

Will: When I…

Joe: …so close.

Will: when I was in Chile, that was the first time though that I took a trip hitchhiking. In the summer I went to the south of Chile and, uh, that was a really good time. Uh, when I first got there we had, uh, I had no idea what I was doin’. And I just thought, I’m just gonna wing it, uh.... I’m never gonna be able to get a job here and, uh.... I just, uh, went on this fantastic trip. And when I got back to the city, uh, realizing that since I wasn’t able to get a job I was probably gonna have to go home.... One of the people that I met, um, in the first week that I was there offered me a job. Or told me about a job that I later got at the school that she worked at. So I was able to live there a whole year.

Joe: What were you doin’ there?

Will: I was teaching, uh, geography and literature to, uh, a lot of different aged kids, mostly around eleven and twelve.

Joe: Oh that sounds like a great job. You actually get a chance to interact with, uh, the younger generation as well.

Will: Absolutely. That’s why I went there in the first place. Although goin’ salsa dancing and, uh, hanging out with my friends was, uh, was another really good part of it.

Joe: [laugh] I can just see you out on the town salsa dancing.

Will: Yeah, I, uh, I was a pretty terrible salsa dancer, it’s true. But I had a lot of fun.

Joe: Well, you know what? I guess that’s really all that matters, doesn’t it?

Will: That’s right. Yeah, absolutely when you go on a trip like that. That’s what you want is to learn a lot and have a really good time.

Joe: Ei, você sabe o que me ocorreu?

Will: O que?

Joe: A última vez que te vi, você disse, você mencionou algo e eu nem percebi até que já tivéssemos nos separado. E é que você já havia morado no Chile antes. Eu nem lembrava disso. É como se eu não soubesse ...

Will: Sim, eu ...

Joe: ... se você já me disse isso.

Will: Sim, eu morei no Chile, uh, por um ano não muito depois da faculdade.

Joe: Espere, em que ano foi isso?

Will: Isso foi em 1992.

Joe: Oh, cara. Então, você, logo depois de se formar, decidiu viajar, ou ...

Will: Levei um ano para economizar dinheiro e depois fui viajar. Sim, eu planejava ir imediatamente. Mas demorei um pouco e, uh, eu consegui.

Joe: Você sabia espanhol na época ou….

Will: Achei que sim.

Joe: [risos]

Will: Quando cheguei ao Chile, percebi que não tinha ideia do que as pessoas estavam falando.

Joe: Foi porque eles estavam falando muito rápido ou ...

Will: Foi porque eu realmente não sabia espanhol.

Joe: [risos] Espere, quanto, quanto de espanhol você sabia antes disso? Você estudou um pouco na faculdade? Ou foi apenas por morar em San Francisco e morar no The Mission ou algo assim?

Will: Oh, eu tinha estudado espanhol desde os 12 anos. E eu tinha, uh, tinha estudado por cerca de três anos na faculdade também. E quando eu cheguei ao Chile, foi muito difícil, hum, uh .... No entanto, eu consegui sobreviver. E consegui fazer amigos.

Joe: Certo.

Will: E eu conheci algumas pessoas muito legais que eram pacientes com o idioma e tudo, uh .... Era um grupo de, uh, pessoas que gostavam de, uh, hum, sair e tocar violão e dançar ...

Joe: Oh, isso é bom.

Will:… e havia muitas, muitas pessoas, muitos estrangeiros, como viajantes, no grupo. Mas não gosta de turistas. Mas pessoas que eram mais ou menos da minha idade e que moravam lá.

Joe: Sim.

Will: E eles, uh, uh ... Havia esse povo chileno que, uh, basicamente eram meus amigos o tempo todo em que estive lá. Eu só estive lá por um ano. Mas ainda assim eu conheci muitas pessoas realmente boas, uh, muito cedo. E quando saí já falava muito espanhol.

Joe: Um ano, é uma boa quantidade de tempo.

Will: Sim, eu não teria sido capaz de aprender tanto espanhol em um ano se tivesse estado na escola por tanto tempo. Mesmo que não fosse, uh, um, mesmo que não fosse super fa- ... uma maneira super rápida de aprender espanhol, uh ... quero dizer, eu aprendi muito mais em um ano no Chile do que em todos os anos na escola. Ainda me deu uma base muito boa. Então, quando eu fui para o, uh, Chile eu pude, uh, um, fazer amigos lá e, uh, falar a língua quase o tempo todo. E quando voltei já sabia muito espanhol. Foi divertido, mas a viagem em si foi a melhor parte. A experiência de, uh, viver, viajar e trabalhar no Chile foi algo que nunca esquecerei. Esse foi um dos melhores anos da minha vida.

Joe: Foi a primeira vez que você fez qualquer tipo de, tipo, sabe, viajar assim? Ou você, você fez uma viagem como esta, sabe, enquanto estava na faculdade durante o verão? Ou…

Will: Eu tinha feito, uh, uh muitas viagens para o México ....

Joe: Uh-huh.

Will: quando eu estava na faculdade. A cada chance que eu pudesse, é claro, eu iria para o México. Ah, eu amo o México.

Joe: Sim, é ...

Will: Quando eu ...

Joe: ... tão perto.

Will: quando estive no Chile, foi a primeira vez que fiz uma viagem de carona. No verão eu fui para o sul do Chile e, uh, foi uma época muito boa. Uh, quando eu cheguei lá nós tínhamos, uh, eu não tinha ideia do que estava fazendo. E eu só pensei, vou improvisar, uh ... Eu nunca vou conseguir um emprego aqui e, uh ... Eu simplesmente, uh, fiz uma viagem fantástica. E quando eu voltei para a cidade, uh, percebendo que como não consegui um emprego, provavelmente teria que ir para casa ... Uma das pessoas que conheci, hum, na primeira semana que eu estava lá me ofereceu um emprego. Ou me contou sobre um emprego que mais tarde consegui na escola em que ela trabalhava. Então, pude morar lá um ano inteiro.

Joe: O que você estava fazendo lá?

Will: Eu estava ensinando, uh, geografia e literatura para, uh, um monte de crianças com idades diferentes, a maioria entre onze e doze anos.

Joe: Oh, parece um ótimo trabalho. Você realmente tem a chance de interagir com, uh, a geração mais jovem também.

Will: Com certeza. É por isso que fui lá em primeiro lugar. Embora dançar salsa e, uh, sair com meus amigos fosse, uh, outra parte muito boa disso.

Joe: [risos] Posso até ver você dançando salsa na cidade.

Will: Sim, eu, uh, eu era um péssimo dançarino de salsa, é verdade. Mas eu me diverti muito.

Joe: Bem, quer saber? Acho que isso é realmente tudo que importa, não é?

Will: Isso mesmo. Sim, absolutamente quando você faz uma viagem dessas. Isso é o que você quer é aprender muito e se divertir muito.
