I had the worst thing happened to me this morning. I
was running to catch the bus and I was talking on my cell phone at the same
time, anyway, it was raining hard and just as I got to the bus stop I dropped
my phone and a gigantic puddle. Some nice man helped me find it. It was
completely soaked. The man told me to take the battery out and let all the
parts dry out during the day. It sounded like a good idea so I tried it. I put
the battery back this afternoon and tried to make a call, but it doesn't work
at all. Now I'll have to go to the phone store and get a new one.
A pior coisa aconteceu comigo esta
manhã. Eu estava correndo para pegar o ônibus e falava no celular ao mesmo
tempo, de qualquer forma, estava chovendo forte e assim que cheguei no ponto de
ônibus derrubei meu celular e uma poça gigantesca. Um homem bom me ajudou a
encontrar. Estava completamente encharcado. O homem me disse para tirar a
bateria e deixar todas as peças secarem durante o dia. Pareceu uma boa ideia,
então tentei. Coloquei a bateria de volta esta tarde e tentei fazer uma
ligação, mas não funcionou de jeito nenhum. Agora vou ter que ir à loja de
telefones e comprar um novo.
I had quite a mishap last night. I got home from my
office really late, about 11 p.m. I reached in my pockets for my keys, my phone
was there but no keys. I was locked out of my apartment. Then I remembered that
I left my keys on the checkout counter at the grocery store at lunchtime, but
it was too late to go back there. My apartment manager has an emergency number
but she charges a fee if you get locked out at night. I decided to call anyway.
She came over and let me in. She was pretty nice about it but as soon as I get
my key back I'm going to make a copy and give it to a neighbor.
Tive um grande acidente ontem à
noite. Cheguei em casa do meu escritório muito tarde, cerca de 23 horas.
Procurei minhas chaves nos bolsos, meu telefone estava lá, mas não havia
chaves. Eu estava trancado do lado de fora do meu apartamento. Então me lembrei
que deixei minhas chaves no caixa do armazém na hora do almoço, mas era tarde
demais para voltar lá. A minha gerente de apartamento tem um número de
emergência, mas ela cobra uma taxa se você ficar trancado à noite. Decidi ligar
de qualquer maneira. Ela veio e me deixou entrar. Ela foi muito simpática, mas
assim que eu pegar minha chave de volta, vou fazer uma cópia e dar a um
vizinho.
I had a little problem this morning. I was in my boss’s
office as I was heading back to my own office I accidentally knock some things
off her desk onto the floor. I was horrified! She had a picture of her kids on
her desk, I was afraid that I broke it. Actually the picture was fine but I
knocked her coffee cup over. There was coffee on her rug. She said not to worry
about it. She was going to call someone to clean the rug at the end of the day,
but I ran into the kitchen and got some plain soda. It worked perfectly. The
stain is completely gone. Now my boss doesn't have to call a rug cleaner.
Tive um probleminha esta manhã. Eu
estava no escritório da minha chefe enquanto voltava para o meu próprio
escritório e acidentalmente derrubei algumas coisas de sua mesa no chão. Fiquei
horrorizada! Ela tinha uma foto dos filhos na mesa, tive medo de quebrá-la. Na
verdade, a imagem estava boa, mas derrubei sua xícara de café. Havia café em
seu tapete. Ela disse para não me preocupar com isso. Ela ia chamar alguém para
limpar o tapete no final do dia, mas corri para a cozinha e peguei um
refrigerante simples. Funcionou perfeitamente. A mancha sumiu completamente.
Agora minha chefe não precisa chamar um limpador de tapete.
I got some ink on my new shirt at work yesterday. At
first I thought it was just some food I spilled it lunch time but then I realized
it was ink from a leaky pen. I just bought that shirt last week! Anyway, I
called my friend Lisa. She told me to put some plain soda on it and then wash
it in cold water. I thought I should take it to the dry cleaner but she said
this would work. It sounded like a cheaper solution too, so I pulled some soda
on it and throw it in the washing machine. When I took it out, the stain was
still there. In fact, it looked worse! Now, I’m going to have to buy a new
shirt!
Eu estava com um pouco de tinta na
minha camisa nova no trabalho ontem. A princípio pensei que fosse apenas um
pouco de comida que derramei na hora do almoço, mas depois percebi que era
tinta de uma caneta com vazamento. Acabei de comprar essa camisa na semana
passada! Enfim, liguei para minha amiga Lisa. Ela me disse para colocar um
pouco de refrigerante puro nela e depois lavá-la em água fria. Achei que
deveria levar para a lavanderia, mas ela disse que funcionaria. Também parecia
uma solução mais barata, então coloquei um pouco de refrigerante e joguei na
máquina de lavar. Quando o tirei, a mancha ainda estava lá. Na verdade, parecia
pior! Agora, vou ter que comprar uma camisa nova!
A: So, you’re a teacher? Is that right?
B: Yep.
A: Do you enjoy teaching?
B: Yes, I do. The vacations are great. But I’ve a got
a really difficult class this year. I tried everything. But they just don’t
want to learn anything. Maybe is the way I teach.
A: Então, você é um professor? Isso

B: Sim.
A: Você gosta de lecionar?
B: Sim, eu gosto. As férias são
ótimas. Mas eu tenho uma classe realmente difícil este ano. Eu tentei de tudo.

A: So, how long have you been a flight attendant?
B: For nearly ten years.
A: Do you like flying?
B: Actually, I do. I love it. And I meet lots of
interesting passengers. The only thing I don’t like is staying in hotels all
the time. I miss home cooking.

B: Yes, it is. Right now we are in the middle of a big
project. We’re designing a new hotel.

B: The only trouble is the woman I work with and I
have completely different ideas of what it should look like.
A: Is that gonna be a problem?
B: I hope not. You see, I’m her boss.
A: Então, você é um arquiteto. Isso

So you work in an auto shop?
B:
That's right. Bob's Auto on
4th Street. Do you know it?
A: Yeah, I think so. Do you enjoy working on cars?
B: Yeah, I really do. I love anything mechanical. The
only trouble is the shop is about an hour from my house.
A: An hour? So, what do you do? Drive?
B: Sometimes. Sometimes I take the bus. The commute is
the worst part, but the money is good. It kind of makes up for it.

B: I'm a hairdresser.
A: Oh, what's it like?
B: Well I love my customers. Some of them are so
friendly! But it's tiring work. I work long hours and I'm on my feet all day.
A: Yeah, that must be tiring.
